Kiss FM, In The Mix and Billboard “The Venue” present Carl Cox

on Friday May 4th 2007

After slammin' it on the festival circuit, the distinguished DJ/Producer Carl Cox makes a rare and highly anticipated return to the environment he cherishes the most, in his only Australian club show at Melbourne's Billboard “The Venue” on Friday 4th May.

Cox makes this not-to-be-missed DJ appearance hot of the trail from playing alongside other world class DJ's including Fatboy Slim, Josh Wink, Yusef and Danny Tenaglia at Ultra Festival, one of the biggest dance industry parties in the world held annually at the Miami Winter Music Conference.   This show also closely follows Australian festival headline spots at the Future Music Festival tour earlier this month as well as New Year's festivities at Harbour Party (NYE, Sydney) and Sunshine People (NYD, Melbourne).

Harnessing all the energy garnered from playing to tens of thousands fans at these colossal dance parties, Cox makes a return to his much loved and more intimate environment in his only club performance in Melbourne since early last year, with no other club gigs lined up in Australia until 2008, to deliver a personal party to treasure for all time.

Cox's renowned affinity to Australia and his dedication to cultivating the local dance industry make this a welcomed homecoming. With the Melbourne area being his ‘home away from home'; twice awarded DJ of the year Cox hosts the world's fastest growing electronic music show, Carl Cox Global, on Melbourne's leading dance music radio station, Kiss FM and is currently producing his next release featuring home grown talent.

Billboard “The Venue” also hosts premier artist and legend Todd Terry in his first-time-ever Melbourne performance ever on Friday 13th April.

Kiss FM, In the Mix and Billboard "The Venue" present TODD TERRY
on Fri 13th April

Billboard
the venue welcomes all the way from New York, en route from the buzz of the Miami Winter Music Conference, Grammy award nominated DJ/Producer Todd Terry for his first-time-ever Australian tour.  The legendary Todd Terry finally graces the Australian shores for an inaugural dance party in Melbourne next month.  With as much reverence as heavy weights ‘'Dave Morels', ‘'Roger Sanchez', ‘'Masters At Work', ‘'Amand Van Heldan' and ‘'Tony Humphies', Todd Terry's influence can be seen in contemporaries such as ‘'DFA', ‘'Cut Copy',  and ‘'2 MANY DJs' The Texican, Can You Party and Bang (to the Batcave), to name a few of his ground breaking contributions.

The legendary Todd Terry's accolades chart back the last two decades, from producing cutting edge underground tracks in the late 80's to breaking into new territory in the 90's as Producer/Remixer for a multitude of UK top 10 pop charts including Keep on Jumpin (a collaboration with super-divas ‘'Martha Wash' and ‘'Jocelyn Brown'), closely followed by Somethin' Going On and Missing, (‘'Everything But the Girl' remix) which became one of the biggest crossover club hits of all time.

The recent triple disc release The Todd Terry Trilogy: Past, Present & Future(INK/Distinctive Records) has inspired Todd fans both old and new with over 30 Todd classics and 10 new Todd songs and highly anticipated the third instalment to the seminal Masterclass compilation series slated for release later this year is sure to secure his ‘'Todd the God' –like status.

Todd Terry is an emblem for bridging the gap between raw-edge mashed up tracks and deep down & dirty house music which personified in his mixes and DJ sets.  Don't miss this unique opportunity to see Todd Terry's for this first performance in Australia.

SWAYZAK AUSTRALIAN TOUR (EASTER 05 APR 2007 – 08 APR 2007)

Any electronic outfit worth its weight can move a room, but only the few and the proud, such as Swayzak, can create one.

For the first time SWAYZAK comes to Australia. This is electronic music with atmospheric funk, uncluttered lushness, full of warmth and feeling.

Over the last ten years, they've created a unique combination of techno, deep house and electro, belting out 5 studio albums, 2 brilliant DJ compilations and releasing a number of side projects. Always on point, Swayzak's sound, like their name, keeps you guessing.

In 1998, for their debut LP “'Snowboarding in Argentina” was awarded Album of the Year by USA mag ‘MIXER'. Receiving critical acclaim for their second long-player “Himawari” in 2000, this brilliant album featured collaborations from proclaimed dub poet Benjamin Zephaniah, Kirsty Hawkshaw and JB Rose, bringing further expression to the already warm, organic soundscapes created by Swayzak. Further cementing their place with releases through !K7, Swayzak went onto release their internationally acclaimed third album “'Dirty Dancing” in 2002. ‘'Loops from the Bergerie' (2004), featured the vocals of Richard Davis and Clair Dietrich and ‘Route De La Slack' combined a divine selection of remixes and rarities. The highly anticipated new album is slated for releases in June 2007.

While Taylor runs 240 volts label and records his own material under his own name and ‘'Darkfarmer', David Brown continues a hectic live schedule with percussionist Francesco Brini as “SWAYZAK” live and with DJ Roger 23 who will join him on this Australian DJ Soundsystem Tour.

So prepare for boarding and allow yourself to be seduced by the music of the SWAYZAK Soundsystem –the sound that transcends gender, race, class, language and geography, Deep electronic soul for your dancing feet.

The New Black video "See You Tonight" clip

“'See you tonight'” is the latest single and video to be released off The New Black's debut Ep “'Your heart, my sleeve'” which spawned the incredibly urgent and catchy song, “Away” which achieved Triple J rotation, and selection for Triple J's Home and Hosed Compilation CD. The Ep has been receiving glowing reviews “Melbourne's catchiest powerpop 4 piece possibly ever” (Single of the week, Rave Magazine).

The Salvation Army, nursing homes, The Clash, Buzzcocks, 70's punk….a weird mix, but also the foundation of The New Black. Singer/songwriters Etienne Mamo and Scott MacArthur met while Scott was performing with The Salvation Army, courtesy of Centrelink, for elderly citizens at a nursing home. Etienne happened to be there visiting and caught Scott's rendition of the Bowie classic “Rebel, Rebel” The two got talking and soon together quickly formed a band.

Their first release, the single “Karenin's smile” was warmly welcomed and the new Ep has continued to see the band creep up on Australian audiences to become one of the hot new bands on the horizon for 2007. It's led to esteemed supports with The Grates, Red Riders, The Exploders, Diamond Nights (US) and US legends Urge Overkill.

Peter Hall & Jaslyn Hall Presents Direct from Brazil The Bossa Nova Hot Club with Sally Ford & The Pachuco Playboys
on Thursday 18 and Friday 19 January 2007

The best of bossa nova, like all great popular music, is simply timeless.” The Times UK

Direct from Rio de Janeiro, eight masterful musicians will turn Melbourne's Spanish Club into a Bossa Nova Hot Club for an evening of seductive beats, samba rhythms and laid-back cool jazz.  This special night of music is a rare opportunity to experience four living legends, backed by a bossa nova quartet, as they deliver the romance and rhythms of the music that seduced the world.

Composer Marcos Valle will direct one of Brazil's most fabled divas Wanda Sá, the man credited with inventing the bossa nova rhythm João Donato on jazz piano, and one of the original members of the bossa nova movement, Roberto Menescal, on guitar.

Marcos Valle has worked with everyone from Sergio Mendes to Frank Sinatra and Sarah Vaughan.  He has composed many great bossa nova classics, in particular ‘Samba de Verão' (So Nice), ‘Os Grilos' and ‘Batucada'.  In recent years Valle's music has been rediscovered by a new generation of DJs and producers, including Sterolab and The Black Eyed Peas.

Wanda Sá first came to notice with her stunning debut album Vagamente (1964)before joining Sergio Mendes and Brasil '65 where her versions of bossa nova songs became recognised around the world as the classic interpretations.  She has since worked with the who's who of Brazilian popular music.

João Donato is a composer and musician credited with inventing the bossa nova rhythm.  Regarded as one of Brazil's most important musicians and arrangers, Donato has released over 30 solo albums since producing his first in 1953.

Roberto Menescal is regarded as one of the fathers of bossa nova, credited with composing such classics as ‘Ah, Se Eu Pudesse', ‘Errinho à Tôa', ‘Nos e o Mar', ‘Rio', ‘Você' and ‘Vagamente'.  Menescal is also a major producer, session player and composer with his own recording label Albatroz.

Supporting this extraordinary line up of bossa nova heavies is a hot quartet of Jesse Sadoc on flugelhorn, Patrizia Alvi on vocals, Alberto Continentino on bass and Renato Massa on percussion.

Bossa Nova is a long love story between two apparently different musical worlds: Brazilian samba and American modern jazz.  It was in the early 1950s that musicians such as João Donato, João Gilberto, Antonio Carlos Jobin and Eumir Deodato began to expand the scope of their popular dance music by adopting modern jazz harmonies and jazz-oriented improvisation.  Some forty years later, the spirit and passion of bossa nova lives on.  Its influence on contemporary music is heard on countless remix albums, Brazilian lounge collections, and by hip producers and DJs worldwide.

POMOMOFO – DEBUT SELF TITLED EP OUT EARLY NOVEMBER

LAUNCH PARTY AT STARFUCKERS, CLUB 77 THIS SATURDAY

Sporting a ‘cult' status on the Sydney scene with their cutting edge computer-rock, visual gymnastics and intertextual madness; electro wunderkinds Pomomofo, drop their debut EP early November amid a buzz generated by their distinct live performances and definitive media attention.

The future looks bright for this young band; the EP features the previously self-released track  'Late Night City Skylines' currently receiving high rotation on Sydney's FBi Radio as well as a new track  'Been Around Town' anticipated for high rotation on Triple J. Such media support is a testament to their talent with early media interest also from press, such as The Brag awarding the EP "Indie Album of the Week", as well as television with Triple J's J-TV filming a special on the lads this weekend (airing soon).

Pomomofo's sound is a collage of tech-electro, synth pop and stadium rock, and draws influences from French house, early 80s electro-funk and Krautrock so it's no surprise that they have performed alongside local heavyweights The Presets, Midnight Juggernauts and The Valentinos as well as at last year's Homebake Festival. And Pomomofo continue to electrify audiences, counting the man himself Jamie Oliver, when they served up a tasty DJ dish at the opening of his famous ‘Fifteen' restaurant in Melbourne.

Following this weekend's EP launch, the boys take to the road, performing a small number of exclusive shows to promote the EP before following up with a larger East Coast tour in February 2006.

Pomomofo's self titled EP is due out early November 2006 on Kitch34/Shock Records with the official launch of the EP at Starfuckers at Club 77, Sydney.

Crashing headlong into destiny, Pharmacy's own brand of sonic destruction celebrates six years of bad taste, pseudo revolutionary posturing and countless trademark violations. Everything has been said before- there's nothing new to say anymore, thus Pharmacy's dark light has shone the nation wide with regular covens in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and more recently Auckland and Tokyo. Instrumental in the early career of David Bowie, Pharmacy has recently been knighted by the Queen Of England for services to science, which include developing a cure for dwarfism as well as some initial success in its attempts to clone Jesus. Kenny Opening Box Office

After only two weeks into release, Kenny, a film by the Jacobson Brothers, distributed by Madman Cinema, has taken over one million dollars at the Australian box office. Kenny opened in cinemas August 17th on 77 screens and will be expanding to a total of 90 screens from 31st of August with further expansions to follow. Kenny was the only film in the top ten to have an increase over the weekend. The box office result recorded an 11% increase. Bill McDermid, National Film Manager for Greater Union Cinemas said “this is sensational and a very rare occurrence in the current market for a film to increase in the second week. We are used to films dropping by 10 – 30%”.

Many cinemas are also reporting repeat visits and witnessing responses that are reminiscent of the good old fashioned days of going to the cinema, “in almost all sessions not only are audience members staying until the very end of the credits they are openly showing their appreciation by clapping and cheering, an experience that we have not seen in many years”. Bill McDermid, National Film Manager for Greater Union Cinemas explains.

Anna McLeish, Theatrical Distribution Manager, Madman Cinema says “the goodwill and support that KENNY is receiving from cinemas, audiences, and critics is exceptional. It is a genuine indicator that KENNY has the potential to enjoy audience popularity for many weeks ahead, and live on in the landscape of Australian cinema. We are thrilled that a film and central character so deserved of this acclaim, is striking a chord with Australians everywhere."

Director of Kenny, Clayton Jacobson said "It’s been wonderful seeing the diversity of audiences respond to Kenny – it seems anyone that has ever been to the toilet is finding common ground with the film from young to old. Kenny appears to be connecting with people on a very personal level.”

About Kenny: - From the biggest festival to the smallest church social, Kenny Smyth delivers porta-loos to them all. Part philosopher, part comedian and all heart, Kenny is one of the cogs in society’s machinery; a knight in shining overalls taking care of business with his faithful ‘Splashdown crew’. The film lifts the lid on one of Australia’s roughest diamonds KENNY as he juggles family tensions, fatherhood and sewage with charm, humour and unflinching dignity.

Crimson Communications announces new Kenny project

Joselyn oversees the national campaign for the Kenny soundtrack on behalf of inSYNC Music out through inSYNC Music/Inertia 7-Aug. Joselyn also works alongside Deb Fryers on the Jacobson Brothers feature film Kenny which releases nationally through Madman Cinemas on 17-Aug.

The delightfully poignant score by Richard Pleasance complements Jacobson’s singular perspective by drawing on bluegrass elements to create a rootsy, earthy, string-driven soundtrack. The music also features a number of original songs sourced from Jacobson’s trips to Nashville when he befriended local musicians and ended up hearing their home recordings. These locals were not slick session players but more unlikely individuals, such as a banjo-playing sushi chef and an octogenarian singer. Their tracks are raw and unpolished, but full of emotion and enrich the texture of the film’s soundtrack with an honesty and dignity to match Kenny’s. Listen out also for Kenny’s iconic version of Bachman Turner Overdrive’s ‘Takin Care of Business’.

Last year when M.A.N.D.Y played Melbourne, it was like someone had turned on a switch inside you- all your lurid desires lit up and people danced their way through the day and into the long, sticky night. These kind of contagious and compulsive rhythms are the ones you’ll find in droves again when Get Physical’s M.A.N.D.Y. return from BERLIN as a sure front runner for the most sweaty and exciting party of the year!

The Berlin based label (Get Physical), production team and general all rounder DJ team (M.A.N.D.Y) continue to cause quite a few ripples amongst DJ and production circles with their signature minimal and funky injections to the house and electro circuit. The duo have been cutting their teeth for over a decade now, playing records in clubs around Belgium, Frankfurt, Berlin, Holland and the States, and stepped towards managing the Get Physical label at a time when Europe, and in particular Germany, began to emerge as an undisputed underground heavyweight on the electronic music scene. The Get Physical sound is rooted in the deep house and acid house movements that emerged from Chicago in the late 80’s, as well as the current minimal techno scene in Germany, but M.A.N.D.Y. reinvent these ideas as something more visceral, more euphoric, and more exciting. It is music that is not afraid to be smart and edgy; music that you can easily immerse yourself into.

The list of influential labels and names seeping out of the scene over there is indicative of the source of the Get Physical vibe: !K7, Ricardo Villalobos, Steve Bug / Pokerflat, Captain Comatose, International DJ Gigolos (and many more no doubt) and you can’t help but get a sense of it being a big large happy family with ideas bouncing off all those at the centre of the controls. Things are hot for this original and organic label of friends with a pure passion for dance floor music.

This Anzac Day you can have it all! Oh yes, something very physical indeed. Not the Olivia Newton-John disco 80’s tune (Physical), although we wonder whether Olivia’s solo efforts have any influence over their funky electro sounds. Unlikely really, you know what I mean?
